Green Procurement Policy

A green procurement policy aims to ensure that goods or services purchased or procured by an organization is done as sustainably as possible. The following attributes are import to consider:

The product of service should be sustainably produced, using an energy efficient low carbon manufacturing process, using sustainably sourced materials. It should be free from toxins and should be recyclable. The 2016 Fuel Consumption Guide will help consumers choose an efficient vehicle. It also recognizes that Improving the efficiency and performance of industrial systems can yield large energy and cost savings, particularly for energy-intensive industries such as iron and steel. This results in significant economic benefits to industry and helps Canada to realize its goals for a sustainable energy future that results in far less impact on our environment.

The above represents a simplified strategy for creating a green procurement policy, but in reality the process can be time consuming particularly in the implementation. The creation of a green procurement guide will increase the sustainability of your operation.

Sustainability Strategy

A sustainability strategy can range for just 2 pages to 200 pages plus depending on the level of commitment. In its broadest terms a sustainability stagey seeks to spell out your organisations MO for becoming, our maintaining sustainability.

Growing awareness of environmental pressures in the past two decades has led to a widespread recognition of the importance of reducing the ecological impact of the built environment, and operating techniques. Going beyond minimum requirements and focusing instead on best practice performance promotes design innovation and can be accomplished using existing technologies and economies of scale, while respecting heritage values.

Many state governments have published Municipal Sustainability Strategies such as Alberta, that define their objectives.

Corporate Sustainability Reporting

Historically the majority of reports presented to shareholders and board members with regards to the performance of a company has been financial, but now in recent years we see a shift to the presentation of the companies performance:

"The Government of Canada has in place a variety of initiatives which demonstrate Canada’s longstanding commitment to promoting responsible business practice. Through its actions, the Government facilitates the commercial success of Canadian companies active abroad while enhancing the contribution of their activities to the broad economic growth of Canada and its trading partners, including those with developing and emergent economies. We work with the Canadian business community, civil society organizations, foreign governments and communities, as well as other stakeholders to foster and promote responsible business practices, and thus support sustainable economic growth and shared value. "

"In an effort to foster and promote corporate social responsibility (CSR) at home and abroad, the Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) encourages Canadian embassies, consulates, high commissions, regional offices and headquarters divisions to undertake CSR initiatives by providing them with a dedicated source of internal funding. While launched by various government offices at home and abroad, these CSR projects often include participation or partnership with other federal and provincial government departments, civil society organizations, academia, industry, chambers of commerce, foreign governments and Aboriginal groups, in order to maintain and uphold Canada’s multi-stakeholder approach.
